Riser count = overall height ÷ 7¼″, then rounded to three candidates: round-down, round-up, and one more. Riser height = overall height ÷ risers. Treads = risers − 1; run = treads × tread length. Board length = √(riser² + tread²) × risers.
Headroom is checked over the floor opening: risers spanning the opening × riser height, minus the top-floor depth, must clear the Min headroom target. Default 6′10″ — the code minimum is 6′8″ plus ~2″, because the finished tread sits on top of the cut line and eats into the clearance. Edit the target per job. A FAIL means the opening needs to be longer or the run stretched.
Minnesota limits: riser ≤ 7¾″, tread ≥ 10″; headroom ≥ 6′8″. Flags are advisory — confirm against the governing local code.
Framing presets: a wall height is ground floor to ceiling (precut stud + three plates: 8′-1⅛″, 9′-1⅛″, 10′-1⅛″); a floor depth is the joist plus ¾″ subfloor. Floor to floor = wall + floor depth. Pick a wall and it stays locked: change the floor depth and the height follows. Typing a height or dragging a line releases it.
